In recognition of Black Love Day, we are joining Black leaders, community members, artists and entertainers for an afternoon of celebration starting at 1:00 pm.

Conversations For Community Care: Black Women's Mental Health

Come to this community conversation around the unique needs of Black women and their mental health in our community. There is often no room in many Black women’s lives for vulnerability, and yet most cannot get access to the mental health supports they deserve. The inequalities and racism faced by Black Canadians can have a negative impact on their mental health, and Black women especially are often taught to ignore their own feelings for the sake of others.

Join Rhythm and Blues Cambridge and Porchlight Counselling and Addiction Services as we bring together a group of Black women therapists in Waterloo Region for an evening of conversation and connection, so that we all can better support mental health outcomes for Black women in our community.

We will be sharing space together in a community circle, taking time to listen and ask good questions, and the event will culminate in a community art project.

Featured speakers:

- Ajirioghene Evi-Cobbinah (she/her), BA, BSW, MSW - Executive Director, Kind Minds Family Wellness, the Community Engagement Specialist at the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies

- Nicole Brown Faulknor (she/her), Registered Psychotherapist, Founder & CEO of Wounds 2 Wings Trauma + Psychotherapy Services and TEAO Canada (Trauma and Embodiment Association of Ontario)

- Suzanne Trotman (she/her), ECE, BRE, M.A. Spiritual Care & Psychotherapy;. Registered Psychotherapist. Owner and Lead Therapist - Winds of Change Therapeutic & Consulting Services.

Emancipation Day: Virtual Learning Circle

Emancipation Day, Aug 1st marks the day slavery was abolished. The recognition of this day acknowledges that slavery existed and has caused intergenerational trauma for many African Canadians. Let us embark on this learning journey together to help eliminate prejudice, discrimination, and longstanding disparity. Join us in uplifting and celebrating what is now Emancipation Day!

This Virtual event via Zoom will be hosted by: Marjorie Ann Knight and Krysanne McLean.

Art From the Heart Processing Night

Three sisters in advocacy work and mental health would love to invite you to our Art From the Heart: Processing Night

We may have been isolated with our thoughts, body sensations and coping through a pandemic for too long, in our opinion. We are creating a space to host a night to process it all and the impacts to our mental health though less talk and move movement through community.

Youth Panel: Raising the Bar When Youth Speak

Young people, youth of ages between 14 years and 18 years old this is your sign, that your voice and ideas matter! The theme this year is Raising the Bar: Going Beyond Ourselves. This year's focus we want to hear from you, what matters and what you have to say. In raising the bar we recognize the need for honest conversation and reflection regarding our shared experience. Let's talk about Black experience in the school, in the community and social environment.

The pandemic has given all of us an opportunity to look inwards, of how we can rise above the uncertainty and continue to have hope for brighter days. This is a panel of local youth. We are excited to hear from you to connect our youth to the world beyond our area codes.

Black Rest and Wellness Afternoon Yoga

Black Rest and Wellness Afternoon Yoga

Join us virtually on Saturday, February 19th from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM as we are led through a yoga and meditation session facilitated by Selam Debs, Anti-Racism Educator and founder of Juici Yoga Studio in Waterloo.

Selam will guide you through how to move out of the unconscious fight, flight and freeze state that we often spend the day in. We will build up some heat to get energy moving with the understanding that we hold our experiences, emotions, thought patterns and intergenerational trauma in our bodies. After building up some heat through movement and breath, we will practice ways of soothing and resting the body and the mind.

This holistic practice will help you centre, de-stress, ground and activate your parasympathetic nervous system- responsible for our ability to access creativity, restoration, renewal and peace.

Bring an open heart & mind, two pillows, one blanket, water and dress comfortably. If you do not have a mat, no worries- you can lay down some blankets instead.

Be ready to relax, breathe and let go.
Rest is our birthright and this practice will be an invitation to anchor ourselves.

No Shame in my Flow Game: Period Box Project Paint Night

Paint along with artist A. Decker in this virtual event hosted on zoom and make your own masterpiece! She will break down each stroke of the brush into an easy to follow lesson that is suitable for beginners to more experienced artists. You will be creating a painting on a period box, as seen in the picture. Why a period box? Because menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life and needn’t be shamed or hidden. So why are we hiding our pads/tampons? Let’s make beautiful period product holders together and display them proudly.

This program is an extension of the Black Girl Excellence program by Rhythm & Blues Cambridge and is part of their Black History Month celebration offered in partnership with Changing the Flow and Cambridge Art Galleries.

This program comes with a free supply kit with everything you need.

Registration is required. Please register for each attendee in your household so you receive the right number of supply kits. Kits can be picked up at Idea Exchange, Queens Square location (1 North Square, Cambridge) on February 15 or 16 during regular service hours (10:00am-6:00pm). Please go to the Members Services Desk when you arrive for pick up.
