The Black Excellence Program (BEP) is a 5-7 week in-school initiative designed to empower African, Black, and Caribbean Identifying (ABCI) students by developing a strong sense of identity, cultural pride, and community connection. BEP provides a safe and welcoming space where students can engage in meaningful discussions, explore their heritage, and develop leadership skills through mentorship and peer support.

Each week, students participate in interactive activities that celebrate Black history, excellence, and resilience, while also addressing real-world challenges and personal growth. Through storytelling, art, music, hands-on projects, and guided conversations, BEP helps students cultivate confidence, self-determination, and a vision for their future.

A core component of the program is youth mentorship, where older students guide and inspire younger participants, reinforcing the idea of “each one, teach one. This structure strengthens bonds across different age groups and empowers students to step into leadership roles and support each other’s success. By the end of the program, students walk away with a deeper appreciation of their roots, a stronger sense of self, and the tools to carry their Black excellence forward into their schools, communities, and beyond.

Our Themes

Each week, BEP explores a unique theme that encourages self-growth, cultural connection, and leadership. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and mentorship, students engage with important topics to build the skills and confidence to shape their future and uplift their community.

  • Discover the power of purpose through art and movement, using creative expression to connect with culture, heal, and inspire.

  • Experience the strength of unity through music by collaborating on a Makey Makey project that harmonizes individual sounds into one collective masterpiece.

  • Build teamwork and cultural appreciation by cooking traditional dishes, strengthening bonds through shared experiences in the kitchen.

  • Explore how personal vision and leadership go hand in hand, unlocking the power of self-determination to shape your future.

  • Celebrate the beauty of natural hair as a symbol of strength and confidence while learning care techniques and cultural significance.

  • Understand the meaning of respect within the ABCI community, fostering appreciation for yourself, your peers, and your environment.
